The one school which never needs a truantofficer is the School of Experience. Whetherwe like it or not, we have to go to this school, all of us; but whether we shall profit by itslessons or waste the instruction is wholly amatter of our own choice. In this story SamParker and his friends, some of whose experienceshave been earlier set forth in the firstvolume of this series, “The Safety First Club,”take a new course, so to speak, with resultantprofit to themselves. “The Safety First Cluband the Flood” finds this group of boys, andespecially its leader, Sam, worried, beset andtried by problems new to them, perplexing, baffling; not very grave problems, at firstglance, but serious enough in the eyes of theboys and not unimportant in their consequences—aphase of life, in short, which hasvery direct concern to young or old.
Sam learns his lesson; his mates learntheirs. Incidentally, they undergo trials of[4]the flesh and of the spirit, and are the betterfor both. They meet adventure which, it ishoped, will be found to the taste of the friendsthe chums have made and may make throughthis volume and those which are to follow it.
