Moo Cow Tales.
There was once a little calfwho was always unhappy.He had a dear mother and twonice little white cousins, withbrown ears, and a beautiful field[Pg 6]to live in, quite full of buttercupsand daisies, and cow-parsley,which little calves mustn’t eatbecause it makes them ill, andyet he wasn’t happy. It wasreally because all the other cowsand calves could not understandhim. And this was why: thislittle calf loved everything that wasred, and, of course, you know thatcows and bulls generally hate redthings.
Now the field next to thecows’ field was a cornfield, andamong the corn there were a greatmany scarlet poppies. The littlecalf thought that he had neverseen anything so beautiful asthese red flowers, and he always[Pg 7]longed to get into the cornfieldand kiss the poppies and tellthem how much he loved them.All day long he used to standwith his little face pressed againstthe hedge, looking into the cornfield,and when the farmer’s boybrought a bucket of food for thelittle calves, this little calf let hiscousins eat it all up and stoodgazing at his darling poppies.
