PREFACE.

The following Lecture was divided in the deliveryinto two parts; illustrative specimens being exhibitedafter the conclusion of the delivery ofeach portion. It has been suggested that Ishould add in the form of notes a few books whichmay prove useful to the students of particularbranches of Archæology; my best thanks are dueto the Rev. T. G. Bonney and the Rev. W. G.Searle for their kind and valuable assistance indrawing up certain of the lists. For ancient artand archæology K. O. Müller’s Manual, so oftenreferred to, will in general sufficiently indicate thebibliography, and it is only in a few departments,in numismatics more especially, that it has beendeemed necessary to add anything to his references.M. Labarte’s Handbook, from which a greatpart of the concluding portion of this lecture isderived, will do the same thing, though in a farless complete manner, for medieval art.
