PREFACE.

The history of any man who had been able todistinguish himself by acquiring in his lifetime thegreatest amount of wealth ever accumulated by oneman, would necessarily be of interest, even if hissuccess had been won by the most ordinary ofmethods or the most marvelous succession of goodfortune. But when that man is one whose careerwas full of the most dramatic incidents; whenhe won his wealth by feats of financial daringwhich astounded the world; when, in short, thatman is Jay Gould, “The Wizard of Wall Street,” then, indeed, the interest is most absorbing. Jay Gouldhas been more prominently before the people ofthe country for the last few years than has any otherman whose prominence depended upon the magnitudeof his fortune. In his history is much to belearned, both for imitation and avoidance, by everyAmerican. This volume contains, not only a completeaccount of the life and deeds of Jay Gouldfor the general reader, but also much for thestudent of financial affairs and Wall street methods. The particular effort of the author has been to secureits absolute accuracy and to make it entirelyreliable. The present absorbing interest in thecareer of the great financier, and the fact that everysource of information concerning him is beingsought most eagerly, makes the work particularlytimely.
