On the 20th of December, 1848, I sailed from Honolulu, where I had beennaval-store-keeper for many years. My vessel was the Chileanmerchant-ship Maria Helena, and she carried as passengers severalothers who had long resided in the Hawaiian Islands, and who were nowreturning for a definite stay at home; among those were my wife, anotherlady, and two small children.
