Translator’s Preface

In tracing the career of Achilles in connectionwith the Trojan war, that inimitable classicstory-teller, Carl Friedrich Becker, follows thelines of Homer’s Iliad. He gives the reader a graphicpicture of the stirring events in the ten years’ siegemaintained by the Greeks, under the leadership ofAgamemnon, king of Mycenæ, in their finally successfuleffort to redress the injury done to Menelaus, king of Sparta, whose wife, Helen, was carried offby Paris. The striking points in this thrilling narrativeare the quarrel between Agamemnon andAchilles; the exploits of Hector, noblest characterof them all; the human impersonations of the gods, who take part in the strife—some on one side, someon the other; the death of Patroclus; the finalreconciliation of Achilles and Agamemnon and theformer’s tremendous exploits; the death of Hector, and the touching interview with the aged Priam, who seeks to recover his body.

vi

The ultimate fate of Achilles and the fall of thecity are not told, nor the wretched end of Agamemnon, who, according to Æschylus, was killed byClytemnestra, the queen, upon his return. Hectoris one of the most conspicuous figures in this greatdrama and appears only second to Achilles amongall the warriors. The exciting Trojan war story hasnever been told more graphically or interestingly inmodern prose than in Becker’s version. In adaptingit to the series of “Life Stories” the translatorhas been obliged to abridge the original work somewhat, but the parts omitted do not interfere withthe flow of the story.
