THE SNOW BABY

A Wonderful Land of ... Mountains, Glaciers, and Icebergs

Hundreds and hundreds of miles awayin the white frozen north, far beyondwhere the big ships go to hunt hugeblack whales, there is a wonderful land of snowand ice, mountains, glaciers, and icebergs; wherestrange little brown people called Eskimos, dressedall in the skins of animals, live in snow houses.

In summer in this wonderful land the sun neversets, but shines all the time day and night; the snowmelts off the ground; blue and white and yellowflowers spring up; and soft-eyed, brown-coatedreindeer wander about, cropping the short grass.

The ice breaks up and drifts outto sea; glaciers or rivers of icepush forward, creaking and groaning, into the water, till enormousicebergs break off from them andfloat away like white ships. The blue wavesdance and sparkle in the sun, and everywheresinging brooks rush down the mountains or fallin silvery cascades over the cliffs, where millionsand millions of noisy seabirds come to lay theireggs.
