THE Editors desire to express their grateful thanksto those who have co-operated with them, andhave contributed papers for this volume. Theironly regret is that the limits of space prevented them frominviting the assistance of others, and thus of includingother subjects, which, it may be, some readers wouldexpect to find here.

But wide as the range is, it is manifestly impossible ina volume of this size to cover the whole ground. It doesnot profess to be a complete history, or to give all thosememories of the past which ought to be of interest tothose of the present day.
