As Governor of the State of North Dakota, I amhappy to write the foreword to the first comprehensiveguidebook that has ever been written for thisState. Compiled by North Dakota writers, the publicationof this book has been made possible by meansof Federal and State funds. The importance of thisbook lies, not only in calling the attention of touristsand other outsiders to the picturesque scenery andthe places of historical significance in North Dakota;but in awakening the consciousness of North Dakotapeople to the historical, sociological, and cultural heritagewhich is theirs.
