FOREWORD

In an older generation, especially among thewriters of the more lurid types of fiction,it was an accepted axiom that “Dead mentell no tales!” But this was before the greatera of modern archeology had impressed itsfindings on the general public, and indeedbefore most of those discoveries had beenmade.

Our generation knows better. Dead mendo tell tales, and marvelous and wonderfulare the stories they bring to us. By meansof an archeological resurrection, the greatmen of antiquity are with us again. Oncemore we hear the accounts of their fascinatinglives and adventures, and read again therecords of their culture. The tonguelesstombs of the distant past have suddenly becomevocal, and this mighty chorus of thedead great has forced us to revise many ofour once cherished opinions.

This, of course, is intendedto apply to the historical sections ofthe Book, and refers to the problem of itsauthenticity and historicity. It still remainstrue that spiritual understanding of its messagecan be derived only from study that issupervised and directed by the Holy Spirit.

This volume, the fourth in the promisedseries to be known as the

will deal with some of those fascinating discoveriesthat bear particularly on the problemof the Old Testament. The succeedingand companion volume, which will be entitled“Crying Stones,” will deal in like mannerwith the records of the New Testament.

The material contained in this apologeticis derived from various sources. Much ofit came from records in the famed BritishMuseum, in London, England. This marvelousstorehouse of treasure from the mostremote antiquity is the greatest collection...
