I must acknowledge that I hesitate to placethis manuscript in print. It has been a strugglefor me in my declining days, with impairedhealth and imperfect vision; but my desire isthat my grandsons, John and Hunt Wentworth,to whom I dedicate this book, may glean from itsleaves some knowledge and, perhaps, it may createa desire to take the same trip some day, having firstgained for themselves a storehouse of knowledgewith which they may be enabled to see the Orientand other foreign lands with a greater degree ofappreciation. By that time, the "Problems ofthe Far East" may have been solved, and lightdivine will shine in the dark places.
If a few copies find their way into the handsof friends, those who know me well will havecharity, as they know the difficulties I have hadto surmount in accomplishing the work.
