s the baron had conjectured,the housemaidwhom he hadcalled out of thenursery to look forLéon's cane, on findingher master hadgone without it, didnot hurry back, butstopped talking tosome of the otherservants for perhapsa quarter of an hour,when she returned tothe nursery, and toher amazement foundthe baby was gone.She was not alarmed at first, exceptshe supposed she should get a scoldingfrom the nurse, who she imagined hadcome in and taken the child to anotherroom; however, having the excellentexcuse that her master had called heraway she went in search of the nurse,but now not finding her anywhere, andhearing from the footman that she wasnot expected back till very late, Mariebecame seriously alarmed.
"Perhaps madame has taken it intoher room; she might have heard it crying,and fetched it," suggested the footman,and Marie, very much against herwill, felt she was in duty bound to goand see.
So, knocking at her mistress's door,she called ou
