THE

TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE.

The works of no medical writer deservea more attentive perusal than those of theillustrious Bichat. Erudite, observant, and industrious, he, at an early age, reareda monument of science, which will perpetuatehis name and matchless talents. From the rich treasures he has left, theTranslator presumes to present this Treatisein an English costume. Whereall is excellent it is difficult to makea satisfactory selection; yet this portionof the author's productions merits[Pg iv]the particular attention of medical studentsand practitioners in general, as itleads to the knowledge of the structureand economy of that part of the animalorganization, which, more than any other,is subject to morbid affections.

The aim of the Translator has beenfaithfulness, clearness, and conciseness, rather than elegance: how he has fulfilledhis intention he must leave to the decisionof the candid Reader.

July 1, 1821.
