Some portions of the following pages have alreadyappeared in the monthly numbers of the SanitaryEngineer, and the complete work is now publishedwith a view to assist Surveyors of Towns andothers who are directly engaged in providing thathouse dustbins shall be regularly cleared, andstreets kept clean; and also in the hope that it maybe the means of drawing some public attention to thequestion, thus showing the householder something ofwhat is being done for his welfare by Sanitary Authorities, and how each individual may assist in the goodwork, instead of, as is now frequently the case, inadvertently or purposely retarding the execution ofsome very necessary though unostentatious sanitarymeasures. I am not aware that any book, or evenpamphlet, has yet been written on this subject, andI venture to believe that in these pages there may befound something to interest all readers.
