Hoppy Toad was a wee bit of a toadwho had only recently seen the light ofday.
One day he strayed away from hishome—a hole in the ground, at theroots of a tree. In doing so he disobeyedMa Toad who told him to playclose to his home.
He hopped along through the woods, often stopping for a while to eat insectswhich happened across his path.Coming to the edge of the woods hesaw a bull-frog heading his way, thoughhe did not know what it was. He hadnever seen one before and was quitefrightened.
“Guess I’ll turn around and go backhome,” he said to himself.
He started hopping back through thewoods as fast as he could, but the bull-frog,[Pg 8]having seen him, hopped afterhim.
“Wonder what that young toad isdoing around these parts; he is toosmall to be hopping through thesewoods,” thought the bull-frog. “GuessI’ll follow him and see what he’s up to.”
Hoppy Toad, not knowing he wasfollowed, hopped along hurriedly.Coming to a neck of the woods wherethere were paths leading in all directionshe became confused.
“I don’t remember coming by thesepaths,” he mused. “I don’t knowwhich one to take. I wish I had obeyedmamma and played around home.”
