PREFACE

At the Centenary of the birth of Sir WalterScott, in the year 1871, a sketch of theBallantyne Press was issued, setting forth itsclose connection with him, and giving statistics ofthe Novels. But the story of the Press, its riseand vicissitudes under the control of James Ballantyneand Sir Walter, its progress and development, and its collapse and new birth, as gleanedfrom Lockhart’s “Life of Scott” and othersources, has not been given in a succinct form. For this purpose the late Mr. W. T. Dobson, forsome forty years one of the principal Readers atthe Press, gathered together considerable materialwhich it has been thought might prove to be ofgeneral interest. The Press has therefore, withthe assistance of Mr. W. L. Carrie, M.A., putthe story into its present book-form.
