It was not my purpose, in the preparation ofthis little volume, to make it an autobiography, but rather a narration of incidents connectedwith the twenty years of humble service which Itried to render the United Brethren Church amongthe mountains of West Virginia.
These incidents present an all-round view, inoutline, of the real life and labors of the itinerantpreacher, a third of a century ago, in an isolatedsection, where the most simple and primitive customsprevailed.
While some of the things related will doubtlessamuse the reader, others, I trust, will lead tothoughtful reflection, and carry with them lessonsinspiring and helpful. The introduction should firstbe carefully read by those who expect to be profitedby a perusal of the pages which follow. Thatgood may come to the church, and glory to ourRedeemer through this unpretentious publication isthe prayer of its
