The disposal of sewage is one ofthe most important problems thatconfront the municipal and sanitaryengineer to-day.
The study of this subject datesback to 1844 when the Healths ofTowns Commission of Londonmade the report which first showedthe real course of the rapid increasein the death rate of the larger cities.In this country practically nothingwas done until 1872 when theMassachusetts Legislature instructedthe State Board of Health toinvestigate and report on thesubjects of sewerage, sewage disposal,and the pollution of streams,and to-day Massachusetts2leads in the investigation of thebest methods of sewage disposal.
