Transcriber’s notes:

In this transcription a black dotted underline indicates a hyperlinkto a page, illustration or footnote; hyperlinks are also marked byaqua highlighting when the mouse pointer hovers over them. A red dashedunderline indicates the presence of a hidden comment that can berevealed by hovering the mouse pointer over the underlined text. Pagenumbers are shown in the right margin.

The text contains some uncommon characters that will not necessarily displaycorrectly with all viewing devices. If some of the characters lookabnormal, first ensure that the device’s character encoding is set toUnicode (UTF-8). The default font might also need to be changed toa Unicode font such as Arial Unicode MS, DejaVu, Segoe UI Symbol orFreeSerif. Symbols representing male and female have been replaced by M and F in thehandheld version. Subscripted and superscripted characters do not alwaysdisplay correctly on handheld devices.

The book contained innumerable typographical errors affectingspelling, punctuation and formatting. Most spelling errors havebeen corrected silently, but spelling variants that mainly reflectcontemporary spellings in the original quoted sources, have beenleft unchanged. A list ofthe corrections and variations can be seen at the end of thetranscription. Punctuation anomalies (errors, omissions, duplications)have mostly been corrected silently, but missing apostrophes havenot been corrected because of uncertainty about intended meaning. Afew missing quotation marks have been inserted within curly brackets{"} and missing words inserted by the transcriber, e.g. {sic} {and}have also been enclosed within curly brackets to differentiate themfrom the numerous words and phrases inserted by the authors. Redundant duplicatedwords have been deleted. Astute readers will probably note persistinginconsistencies involving italics, fonts, hyphenation, ellipses, accents, and ligatures (ae/æ, oe/œ) that have been left unchangedbecause they have no impact on interpretation of the text. The Tableof Contents does not correspond accurately with headings used in thetext.

Footnotes are located at the end of the book and are hyperlinkedin the text. In most cases a return hyperlink will take the readerback to the appropriate place in the text, except for those footnotesthat are cross-referenced multiple times. In these cases the returnhyperlink will take the reader back to the location where thefootnote was first referenced – it is better to make use of thebrowser's back-arrow to return to the correct location. An error infootnote numbering was corrected silently, and a missing footnote[120] was inserted after being identified in the original source.

Several large tables have been compressed in size to enable viewingon small screens and when necessary a key has been added to identify thecolumn headings.
