CHAPTER XXIX.

ROY BARON’S FIRST CAMPAIGN.

In the press and excitement of thishis first campaign, Roy did not losesight of Molly’s suggestion that heshould keep a slight journal of thecourse of events. The plan commendeditself to him, and he carriedit out, albeit in somewhat fitful style.His entries were brief and irregular,yet in the future they might well proveto be of interest to himself and hisfriends.

The life that he had led, more especiallyhis Bitche experiences, hadtended to give him an unusuallythoughtful turn for his age; and hewas not troubled by the smallest difficultyin expressing himself on paper.To write was as easy to Roy as tospeak.

For very obvious reasons, however,the journal was scarcely started beforehe decided not to send any partof it to Molly, but to write separateletters to her, as occasion served, keepinghis memoranda for the present tohimself.

“At last the chief Command hasbeen bestowed where it should be;and for five days past Sir John hasbeen at the Head of Affairs. Somehope now that things will go right!Jack says that when Sir John was first{450}placed third in command, after being first,he declared that fight for his Country hewould, and no man should Hinder him;and if the King saw fit to bid him act asEnsign, he would unhesitatingly obey.
