PREFACE.

The subject of this little work develops,on anatomical and physiological principles, asystem of Gymnastics for the Fingers andWrist, the object of which is—, to lay a solidand scientific foundation for the acquisition oftechnical skill in the fingers and wrist, as appliedto the playing on musical instrumentsand to finger-work generally.

For a detailed account of the circumstancesunder which this system was discovered, I referto the Introductory Remarks, wherein I haveexplained the process of reasoning and the seriesof experiments, which enabled me to arrive at theresults I have now the pleasure of submittingto the consideration of my countrymen; moreespecially to all those among them who are[Pg vi]engaged in musical pursuits, or any other workrequiring the constant use of the fingers.

I may simply state that both the scientificprinciples and the practical utility of thissystem of Gymnastics—, after having been subjectedto the test of numerous experiments—,have met with the approval of the highestanatomical, musical, and gymnastic authoritiesof Germany; at whose special solicitation I wasinduced to make these discoveries known bymeans of public and private lectures—
