The author of this book used the spellings "aline," "gage," and "hight"for the conventional spellings "align," "gauge," and "height." As theyare used consistently and do not affect the sense, they have been leftunchanged. Some obvious typos and misspellings that do not affect the sensehave been silently corrected. The following substantive typographicalerrors have been corrected:"being" to "bearing" (p. 68);"FIG. 50" to "FIG. 56" (p. 91),and "Fig. 2" to "Fig. 73" (p. 159).Two other likely errors have been left as queries:lead/load on p. 142and beating/heating on p. 177.These five changes are indentified bydotted red underlining with pop-up titles.
The numerous figures from the original are reproduced here as 16-levelgrayscale images in .PNG format, scaled to no more than 512 pixelswidth to fit a small window. When an image is enclosed in a broad grayborder, it is linked to a higher-resolution version; click to open it.
This issue of the Power Handbook attempts togive a compact manual for the engineer who feels theneed of acquainting himself with steam turbines. Toaccomplish this within the limits of space allowed, ithas been necessary to confine the work to the descriptionof a few standard types, prepared with theassistance of the builders. Following this the practicalexperience of successful engineers, gathered fromthe columns of Power, is given. It is hoped that thebook will prove of value to all engineers handlingturbines, whether of the described types or not.
